I read somewhere that the best vocabulary level to write in is....
.., "at an 8th grade level."
That has ALWAYS stuck with me.
It explained that most people read and write at this level, even after graduating from years of college.
If I recall, it was a "Readers Digest" article that covered human studies. It was back in the 1980"s.
I have given this alot of thought over the years.
I believe it to be true.
A comment was written by a wonderful writer Alfred W. Smith Jr. stating he enjoyed the simplicity of the poetry I have written. Even in the personalized complexity of the subject matter and that he understood them. He was very careful in HIS words not to offend He didn't offend....
He gets me! Thamk you!!!!!!
He UNDERSTOOD them. He understood what MATTERED.
I love his writing and have occasionally "envied" his wonderful writing style.
He is a writer to read. His words, his stories! Wow! Great reads!
As I stuggle through some technical terms on some other writters pieces( sencha?) and occasionally am forced to look up word defenitions, I will forever think of Alfreds,( may I call you Alfred?) KIND and true words.
I seek to keep things simple and easily understood. The thesaurus in my mind WANTS to use big words even as the dictionary stays closed. Fancy words! Impressive words words to make....my head spin? LOL
Just knowing and having that bit of confirmation on ONE piece has managed to ease my mind from going off on a "proof of vocabulary" piece!
I too had noticed that my poetry, in particular, was VERY basic rhymes and rythms of story tellng. They have MORE reality in them then I could EVER attempt to describe in a written story, often due to the subject matter. But I NEED to tell. To get it out of me!
Cameron has always been there to keep me motivated and to him I will always be appreciative! He once asked me if i was for "real" or something to that affect. (EB and the NB) He let me come on here, in my insanity, and spill my guts! He opened an avenue for me to finally live and breath in.
Being UNDERSTOOD, is ALWAYS a writers goal and it's nice to know it has been achieved.
I as ME.... am rarely understood.

Simply put.
