I watched the BAFTA awards on Sunday, and I noticed how many actresses wore black as a sign of solidarity for the Me Too/ Time's Up movement. Thankfully, we were spared the speechifying and the grandstanding that usually comes with this sort of campaign. I suspect that come the Oscars, actresses will not hold back.

While I support the aims of the movement to call out and challenge bullying and harassment in Hollywwod and the wider society, I do not like the route that Me Too is taking especially on social media. There is a bullying under current that seeks to force actresses into compliance. Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge attended the Baftas in a green dress, as opposed to black. She was attacked on social media. Actresses felt obliged to wear black as they feared being lablled as collaborators or traitors to the sisterhood. What about choice or respect?

The French actress Catherine Deneuve challenged the Me Too campaign recently. She denounced the witch hunt like atmosphere currently in Western society. She said that men should be free to hit on women, afterall is that not part of human inter action? Of course, she was attacked as an apologist for rape and accused of internalised misogyny. The arrogance of the Me Too crowd is amazing. They know what's best and no one should challenge them.

I also don't like the whole notion that all allegations made against men are automatically believed as gospel truth. Presumption of innocence has gone out the window. Harvey Weinstein may be a despicable human being, but he too is entitled to due process. In this current atmosphere, any allegation made against a male actor is automatically believed. The allegation may be a drunken pass, crass remark, inappropriate text or a hand on a knee. Everything is lumped together. There are some feminists who have used this climate to promote a toxic brand of feminism that depicts all men as evil misogynists. Where will this lead us?

One of the worst aspects of this whole saga is the grandstanding and virtue signalling coming from some actors. Colin Firth says that he will never work with Woody Allen again. Kate Winslet expresses regret at working with Woody Allen. Go on you You Tube and watch videos of her expressing delight at being asked to star in his film Wonder Wheel. She goes into full chat show mode when describing the conversation between them. She even impersonates him!

We are currently in a strange climate that has exposed sexism and harassment. There is a danger that we will blow everything out of proportion and be outraged at everything. Who will benefit from that?
