This Endless War

Drivin’ down this winding mountain road in the rain,
Wonderin’ if I’ll ever come back home,
I left my woman cryin’ in the doorway once again,
I never thought I’d feel so all alone.

Fading ghosts are drifting through the redwoods, out of sight,
Spirits of restless souls who came before,
Fine young kids who’d believed the lies on Fox News every night,
Who never did return from this damned endless war

“You can see the world and save the good old USA,
Find a great job when your tour is done.”
That’s what the Army told me, now I’m waitin’ for that day,
I hope I make it home before my final race is run.

An Afghan mountain isn’t where I’d like to sing my final song,
But I hope I can go easy when the time is nigh,
Surrounded by my loved ones, wandering towards the light
I can’t outsprint the reaper no matter how I try.

Drivin’ down that winding mountain road in the rain,
Wondering just what we’re fighting for,
Am I goin’ to save the world or take a bullet in the brain,
Are we the good guys or the bad guys, in this damned endless war.

“You can see the world and save the good old USA,
Find a great job when your tour is done.”
That’s what the Army told me, now I’m waitin’ for that day,
I hope I make it home before my final race is run.
