The Coronavirus pandemic has given so many of us extra time on our hands due to the lock down. During this awful crisis, you have to grab your silver linings wherever you can. We are lucky that we have multiple streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Video.

I have discovered a real gem on Netflix called Dark, a German science fiction series. This is the first German series commissioned by Netflix and all I can say is " Wow!". This drama is amazing. It is about four families in the town of Winden whose lives are changed when a boy goes missing. The families are all connected due to time travel. It is also a town full of secrets as each family has a ..dark history.

At the heart of the story is young Jonas Kahnwald, the son of Hannah and Michael. Jonas will discover shocking things about his past when he goes back in time. I can say no more. This is like Back to the Future without the comedy, and laced with sadness.

There are three series that takes you back and forward in time as the story deepens. Characters meet older versions of themselves who reveal more of the mystery and or seek to manipulate them. Can you alter the past when if you go back in time or do you create an endless loop from which you cannot escape? If you go back in time can you change your family history? Big questions.

It is refreshing to watch a drama that challenges you, and demands that you pay attention. It does not dumb itself down, but it requires you to switch your brain on. The makers of this drama know exactly what they are doing and know when to end. Some series like Lost lose their way, while others like Game of Thrones hit a peak and then decline in quality. Dark ups the ante with each series. It also gives you a satisfying ending.

This is drama of the highest quality in terms of storytelling, acting and casting. This is not junk food TV, you will be thinking about it long after you have seen it. I will definitely watch it again.
