I watched all of Season 2 of The Crown last week and I enjoyed it. The Netflix drama is so well acted and written, you are tempted to believe that this is real history and not a drama based on real people and events. One of the opening episodes deals with the Suez Crisis in 1956. The British Prime Minister Anthony Eden decided to attack Egypt to retake the Suez Canal. The military action ultimately resulted in Eden's political demise. A glittering career came to an premature end.

I couldn't help thinking about David Cameron, the former Prime Minister who resigned in 2016 after the vote about our membership of the European Union. A bad decision was made which has impacted on our status in Europe. Cameron, confident of his abilities, thought that he would persuade the voters that reamining was the best choice. He was wrong. He had to step down.

The vote to leave ended Cameron's career, and has ushered in a nasty populist tone into our mainstream politics. It has ripped open all the wounds within the Conservative Party for all to see. Cameron's successor, Theresa May, has failed to bring the nation together, as there is a running battle between Remainers and Brexiteers. May's Cabinet is split between those who want a Hard Brexit and those who want a Soft one. Anyone who questions the manner of our leaving is deemed a traitor or enemy of the people. The right wing press attacks polticians AND judges who have legitimate questions about our leaving. This is what Cameron's decision has wrought.

People who voted to leave are deemed stupid, racists or uneducated. Not everyone who opted for Brexit is a racist, but some Remainers find it easier to characterise them that way. Families, friends, work colleagues have turned on each other. The wounds may never heal even after we leave the EU in 2019. The government have yet to state what a post Brexit Britain will look like. We are told by Brexiteers that we must not worry, as our departure will usher in a period of growth once we are unshackled from Brussels. Ignore the experts, they tell us.

What of David Cameron? He is doing what all former leaders do: he is writing his memoirs and making speeches. A man can create total havoc in his nation, walk away and then go on the lecture circuit and sit on the boards of banks. Makes you sick! History will not be kind to this man, just like Anthony Eden.
