We are halfway through the year, and yet so much has happened. You cannot escape the feeling that you living through a cataclysmic time. We are in the middle of a global pandemic, there is racial strife in the United States triggered by the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police.

The whole issue of racism, specifically how the police deals with people of colour has been brought to the fore. I have seen countless videos of the people using excessive force throughout the United States. So much for the post racial society that people spoke about when Barack Obama was elected.

Once again there are riots in the cities against police brutality. Once again, we see the America's social problems laid bare. In times like this, you need a real leader who can unite and heal. Donald Trump is not that kind of President. His natural instinct is stoke tension, and present an image of a tough guy. If the Coronavirus and has exposed him as incompentent , then the George Floyd highlighted his total inability to strike the right tone. Last week, he had a peaceful demonstration teargassed in Lafayette Park, just so he could walk to a church with the Bible as a prop. Do you think Trump has ever read The Bible? He should read Luke 14: verse 11 in the New Testament. All who make themselves great will be humbled.

It says a lot about Trump that his former Secretary of Defense James Mattis, a former Marine General, has criticised him. He says that Trump is first President who has not sought to unite his people. He is even pretending to try. The reason? He cannot, he does not know how. He appeals to white nationalists, Christian Evangelicals and his MAGA base. The wider population are not his concern. When Mattis says that about his former boss, you know that there is a serious problem. President Trump has threatened to use the military against protesters. This is sort of thing you see in the Third World dictatorships like Ferdinand Marcos in the Phillippines or Bashar Al Assad in Syria.

The year 2020 is starting to look a lot like 1968. The year 1968 was the most impactful year post 1945. The United States was bogged down in Vietnam. Two leading figures in American society, Dr Martin Luther King and Senator Robert were assassinated.King's murder sparked a wave of protests and riots throughout the United States. It was a year filled with turmoil. The only good thing was that in December, the Apollo 8 mission orbited the moon. The crew took some amazing pictures of Earth from outer space.

The best thing that Donald Trump can do for his country is resign. He lacks the skills, maturity or intelligence to do the job. He won't, of course, and that will be America's tragedy.
